Video, Voice or Text: Which to Start With
There are three ways to start a conversation here, and they are genuinely three modes rather than one mode and two consolation prizes. Which one suits you on a given evening depends less on confidence than on what you want exposed, and how much you want to be able to change your mind.
Text — start here if you are unsure
No camera is switched on at any point, so the browser never interrupts you with a permission prompt and there is nothing behind you to tidy. The conversation is as low-stakes as it is possible to make it.
The honest trade-off is pace. Text is slower, and the thing that makes video worth doing — reading a face while someone talks — is exactly what is missing.
Voice — the underrated middle
No camera either, but you keep tone, timing and laughter, which is most of what text loses. For a lot of people this is the mode that turns out to be right and the one they never thought to try.
Good when you want a real conversation but your room, your lighting or your evening is not fit to be seen.
Video — what it is actually for
You see each other. That is the point, and the reason the rest of the product exists.
One detail worth knowing before you choose it: the camera button during a call covers the picture, it does not stop your camera capturing. If your intention is that no camera runs at all, the right move is to start in voice or text rather than to start a video call and cover it.
A quick way to decide
If you are undecided, this ordering is a reasonable default:
- Unsure about the whole idea, or on a shared computer → text.
- Want a real conversation, but not to be seen right now → voice.
- Want the thing you actually came for → video.
- Somebody might walk in behind you → not video, and no amount of covering the picture changes that answer.
If video is what you want and it will not start
That is nearly always a browser permission that was answered once, long ago, and is now remembered. The prompt only appears once per site per browser, and no website can make it reappear — the setting has to be changed on your side. It takes about fifteen seconds once you know where to look.
